Our work in Orkney

Based at the Orkney Research and Innovation Campus in the town of Stromness, ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ Orkney focuses on remote, rural and island perspectives supporting a broad range of research, teaching and entrepreneurship activities. Themes include health and wellbeing, transport, built environment, digital heritage, creative business, the graduate apprenticeship programme, and the Arctic.

Objectives

Working in partnership with local stakeholders our objectives are: 

  • Research and knowledge exchange that harness ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ expertise to address local challenges and opportunities;
  • Support the development of skills, educational and entrepreneurship opportunities in Orkney, aligned to the needs of local stakeholders, that offer an excellent student experience and support social and economic regeneration;
  • Creating an evidence base to influence and impact policy and practice in other island and remote and rural regions, through innovative research and teaching programmes.

Looking North

ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ is a member of , a network of more than 200 higher education and research institutions across northern regions that address global challenges of Arctic people and societies by providing unique educational, research and innovation opportunities. ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ is also a member of the (ScAN) which became a recognised regional centre of UArctic in 2023. ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ Orkney has built on historic links with Orkney and the Arctic, supporting the islands to play a pivotal role in Scotland’s ambition for enhanced Arctic cooperation.

ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ has a strong commitment to collaboration, co-production and partnership with local stakeholders. These relationships are key to the success of ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ in Orkney and are vital to our future ambitions ensuring economic, teaching and learning, and research initiatives aligned to local priorities.
